SÃO PAULO, Brazil, August 26, 2009 (SET 2009 Broadcast and Cable, Booth # 01) — Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, announced that it is planning localized manufacturing of television transmitter products in Brazil. The initiative will enable customers in the region to benefit from competitive pricing, improved lead-time and immediate availability of Harris leading-edge broadcast technology and post-sales support. Harris has focused its sights for potential production locations on Campinas — a region 80 miles northwest of Sao Paulo often referred to as the Brazilian Silicon Valley. This area would facilitate logistics into numerous cities and states, as well as throughout Mercosur (the Common Market of the South) and other Latin American countries. This new operation will leverage several advantages of the region such as Mercosur trade agreements and Brazilian tax exemptions. "Brazil is one of the five biggest media markets in the world, and we always knew we needed to have a strong presence there," said Tim Thorsteinson, president, Harris Broadcast Communications. "This initiative is part of detailed, long-term strategy that Harris put in motion several years ago, with the plan being to launch once the DTV rollout gained momentum. A Campinas facility would enable us to maximize the cost benefit equation for our customers by creating direct tax benefits for them, while also ensuring high-quality post sales support and better customer service." Long expected by a large and loyal customer base, the company's strategic pursuit coincides with the Latin American introduction of the Harris® Maxiva™ UAX series of air-cooled transmitters for low- and mid-power UHF multimedia broadcasters, which are targeted to be made in Brazil. Featuring Harris PowerSmart™ technology for best-in-class efficiency, Maxiva UAX air-cooled transmitters adapt to worldwide analog and digital DTV and mobility standards and achieve a truly global vision for efficient, reliable terrestrial TV transmission. Harris is showcasing the Maxiva UAX transmitters during this year's SET 2009 Broadcast & Cable show taking place August 26-28 in Sao Paulo. "We are extremely happy about this initiative and the incredible benefits that it will bring to our customers, who for a very long time have shared our vision and desire for getting one of the best products in the world built in Brazil," said Nahuel Villegas, regional vice president of Harris Broadcast Communications for the Caribbean and Latin America. "The timing of it all could not be better for Brazil or for Harris." "Demand for our transmission products in Brazil has historically been very strong, and we expect it to be even stronger with this pursuit," said Phil Argyris, vice president of Television and Radio Transmission. "Many loyal customers are already lining up to get the first production units this facility will generate, so we are working hard to make sure that our Brazilian-manufactured products will have the highest quality levels in the entire industry." Harris Broadcast Communications offers products, systems and services that provide interoperable workflow solutions for broadcast, cable, satellite and out-of-home networks.
